SPECTRUM
Spectrum was created for Swire Properties’ annual VIP Lounge at Art Basel Hong Kong 2019.
This piece celebrates the architecture of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, wrapping around its columns to create a new space within the building. Using bands of fabric, Paul Cocksedge utilised colour and symmetry to create visual rhythm. A significant amount of underlying engineering went into creating the installation's geometrical arrangement, which is reminiscent of architectural drawings, as if recreated in three dimensions. By foregoing solid walls, the space feels open but intimate, inviting guests in without enclosing them.

The unique space represents a platform dedicated to moments of art appreciation as well inspiring dialogues. The vivid tones of the installations, which are all inspired by Swire Properties’ own primary colours, red and blue, draw the eye upwards and towards a stage.
“My studio has been working in Hong Kong and the region for the last 10 years, and we’ve always been inspired by its creativity and design approach. It’s fascinating to observe its different perspectives and life rhythms and see how that connects with our own experience back home in London. For me, Art Basel isn’t just a chance to meet with international audience of art and design professionals and lovers. It’s a place to see new things, find inspiration, and understand how artists and designers are interpreting the topics shaping our time,” says Paul Cocksedge.
